1. HOW MUCH OF THE ROOF CAN YOU SEE FROM THE STREET?
Before you choose a colour, stand outside your house and figure out how much of the roof you’re actually able to see. Walk all the way around the house, including the back—the percentage of the roof you can see will differ based on where you stand.
Of course, the steeper the gradient and the taller the roof, the more you’ll be able to see, and the more important your roof’s colour will be to its overall resale value and aesthetics. If you have a relatively flat roof and can’t see much from the street, you can likely get away with valuing energy-efficiency over aesthetics.
Bear in mind that the roof’s colour isn’t the only crucial aspect of its aesthetics. The flashing, gutters and trim may be more visible from the road than the roof itself. You’ll also want to match the flashing and gutters to the roof’s colour, as well as to your home’s materials, so make sure that whatever you can see looks the way you want it to.
